A bankruptcy filing will stay on your credit report for up to 10 years. From the date of filing the petition. A lot of people will hear that and think “I can’t get any credit for 10 years.” That’s not the case. Most of my clients are able to obtain credit shortly after their discharge. A credit card, for example, no problem, you’ll be able to get that shortly after discharge. Even purchasing a new home is possible, although you might have to wait a little bit longer to show that you’ve reestablished your credit. 10 years is the time it’ll take for it to fall off, but the negative effects, as far as establishing credit, or reestablishing credit after filing, much shorter than that.
